After School Program at GA Tech
Georgia Tech & the College of Computing’s Office of Outreach, Enrollment and Community would like to introduce the I-3 Experience, a trio of afterschool programs for high school students interested in computing. These programs provide a space and opportunities for high school students to see the world computationally and to begin imagining the future of computing by designing and prototyping new applications and devices.
Overall, we aim to introduce students to computing in their everyday lives; engage them in designing applications that can change the world and have a positive impact on society through hands-on activities; help students develop project management skills; and cultivate creative, open-ended computational thinking. In addition to helping students develop their repertoire of computing and engineering skills, we work with students and their families on a more individualized basis to determine their collegiate goals and help them become successful. This means students on both ends of the academic spectrum are welcomed to apply. I-3 participants gain these experiences through a progression of three afterschool programs – Imagine, Investigate, and Innovate. This fall we are offering opportunities for students to participate in Imagine.
This program is targeted towards 9th and 10th grade, underrepresented students (minorities and young ladies) from the Atlanta metropolitan area, although students from varying backgrounds and other grade levels are regularly admitted. Classes take place once a week after-school and are held on Georgia Tech’s campus. This a great opportunity for your students to get a chance to explore a college atmosphere and meet undergraduate students (who help to facilitate classes and mentor program participants). We will be accepting 32 students through the open application process for Imagine this fall, as well as 32 students from established high school partnerships. Please recommend any students who you feel might be a good fit for this program.
Classes will begin the week of September 16th – 20th. Because of these fast approaching dates, please have all student applications submitted by Tuesday, September 10th 2013 to Chanteal Edwards (email: [email protected]). Program participant selection notifications will be sent out on Wednesday September 11th 2013.
